The pie chart illustrates how frequently U.S. adults shopped online in 2015, while the bar chart compares their preferences for buying products online or in physical stores.
Overall, it is clear that a significant proportion of U.S. adults shopped online less frequently, and physical stores were generally preferred, except among weekly online shoppers.
According to the pie chart, just over a third of U.S. adults (37%) reported shopping online less frequently, whereas just above a quarter (28%) did so a few times a month. Just under a fifth of adults (15%) were weekly online shoppers, and around a fifth did not shop online at all.
Turning to the bar chart, adults who shopped online less frequently showed an obvious preference for physical stores, with nearly 80% choosing to buy in shops compared to just under 20% who preferred online purchasing. Similarly, among monthly online shoppers, nearly 60% favoured physical stores, while just over 40% preferred shopping online. In contrast, weekly online shoppers showed the opposite trend, with just over 60% preferring online purchases, compared to nearly 40% who chose to buy in physical stores.
