The pie chart elucidates the percentage of accommodation owned and rented in 1991 and 2007 in the UK. On the overall, it is observed that the greater fraction of the population in the UK are home owners, while about a fifth of citizens engage in social renting and a very small number of the population in social housing. However, the number of private renters have been constant in both years.
In the year 1991, 60% of UK’s population were home owners, this percentage grew to 70% in 2007 as the number of homes also increased from 22 million to 27 million. Although there was an increase in the number of home owners, the proportion of inhabitants who were into private renting of homes remained the same in 1991 and 2007 at 11% of the population in both years.
On the contrary, the percentage of inhabitants who engaged in social renting and social housing declined in both years. In 1991, the number of occupants who were social renting stood at 23% while it fell to 17% in 2007. Also, the number of occupants in social housing in 1991 was 6% and reduced to 2% of the population in 2007.
