The two pie charts illustrate how adults in a country spent their time on various activities in 1958 and 2008.
Overall, adults spent the majority of their time sleeping and working in both years, although the proportion of time spent sleeping declined. Other activities consistently made up the smallest proportions.
In 1958, adults devoted most of their time to working and sleeping, each accounting for nearly a third of the day. Just over 19% of the time was spent going out with friends or family, while the proportions of time spent relaxing at home and commuting to work were relatively small, at 8% and 6% respectively. The remaining 2% was allocated to other activities.
In 2008, the percentages of time spent sleeping and going out with friends or family dropped noticeably to 25% and 6% respectively. In contrast, the time spent working increased significantly, rising by 7 percentage points. Likewise, there were increases in time spent relaxing at home, commuting, and on other activities, reaching 13%, 8%, and 8% in turn.
