The pie chart illustrates the proportion of UK students that have selected different foreign languages in the years 2009 and 2014. Overall, it can be observed that the most popular language remained French throughout both the years, with Russian being the least opted amongst them all.
In 2009, it is evident that Spanish and Russian together made up about a quarter of the choices. On the contrary, in 2019, Spanish witnessed a 1.5 times increase, representing 24% on its own, with Russian declining marginally to 8%, the lowest out of both the years.
In 2014, Italian was chosen by approximately a quarter of the student population, which was a favourable increase from the previous 20%, leading it to be the second most chosen language out of the lot. However, despite being the most picked in both the years, French dropped from a whopping 43% to almost one-third in 2014. The students selecting German remained somewhat stable, with only a 2% increment in 5 years.
