The given maps illustrate the ground floor of the library in 2001 and its redeveloped layout in 2009.
Overall, it is clear that the arrangement of the ground floor underwent significant changes, with more diverse genres of books introduced. However, the location of furniture remained generally the same over the period.
In 2001, the library primarily offered self-help, history, and fiction books to customers. By 2009, they had all been moved to the left-hand side of the floor, adjacent to cookery, economics, and law genres, which had been newly added. Besides, the area which was for the fiction genre in 2001 was substituted by children’s books, located above the section for kids, in 2009. Looking to the right-hand side, there was previously an area containing newspapers and periodicals, but after redevelopment, it was filled with films and DVDs, with the introduction of computers right next to it.
Regarding the other facilities, the previous tables were changed into longer ones but still maintained at the centre of the map. In addition, the librarian’s desk, the entrance, and the stairs remained unchanged over the eight-year period.
