The maps illustrate the changes made to the South Wing of Walton Museum in 2008 and 2012, following the redevelopment project.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the layout of the South Wing of Walton Museum was significantly modernized and expanded with several facilities such as a children play area, a self-service room, and a lift. Indeed, some areas were relocated or combined, enhancing its functionality.
Regarding 2008, the South Wing featured six main parts in total, including a shop, reception, reading room, cloaks room, stairs, and a special exhibition room. Specifically, the cloaks room, shop, and special exhibition room were horizontally built on the first floor while stairs were located between the shop and cloaks room. The reception and reading room could be accessible on the second floor, with the entrance situated on the outside of the floor..
In 2012, a roof and two more floors were added in the South Wing’s structure, transforming it into a four-storey building. The reception, special exhibition room, shop, and reading room consistently remained the same location, whereas the cloaks room was combined with the reception. Stairs were thoroughly removed in order to introduce a new lift while the entrance was developed into an entrance hall. Additionally, the cloaks room in 2008 was replaced by a children’s playground, reinforcing the recreational purpose of the 2012’s design. A restaurant, self-service room, and terrace were added on the third floor, just below an exhibition room on the fourth floor.
