The maps illustrate the South Wing of Walton museum in 2008 and 2012 after refurbishments. Overall, the South Wing underwent significant renovations, with two more floors added. The most notable changes include the addition of a restaurant, children’s play area, and a lift.
In 2008, the layout of the South Wing was relatively simple. Visitors could enter the building via the path leading to the entrance, which opened to the reception. From there, they could reach the reading room, which was located to the right. Between the reception and the reading room, there were stairs providing access to the lower level. The stairs were between a shop and a cloakroom, and adjacent (=next) to the shop to the left, and beneath the entrance, there was a special exhibition room.
By 2012, the original entrance was transformed into an entrance hall, with a terrace added above it. The reception area was redesigned to combine the reception and the cloakroom. Meanwhile, the reading room, the shop, and the special exhibition room remained unchanged. However, a new children’s play area was constructed in place of the former cloakroom.
The stairs were replaced by a lift leading to two newly constructed floors. On the second floor, a restaurant was added to the left of the lift, while a self-service room was located to the right. The top floor featured a new exhibition room, with a roof built above it.
