Overall, number of physicians followed an upward trajectory, while their gender and place of birth changed by different amounts. 2006 was the year with the highest number of doctors,where male doctors who born in Australia took the lead.
In 1986, the proportion of male doctors hold the highest proportion of physicians in Australia showing 75 percent, yet proportion of male doctors saw a decline to 65 percent in 1996 and 60 percent in 2006. However, female doctors mirrored the trend of their male co-workers by existing a consistent growth. Initially, their proportion stood at 25 percent in 1986, which was followed by a slight increase to 30 percent in 1996 and 40 percent in 2006.
The place of their birth somehow exhibited a similar scenario with their gender. In 1986, 62 percent of doctors from Australia hold a significant position, where the doctors from overseas were much more lower showing 35 percent. 1996 started with modest decline for both Australians and foreigners, observing 55 percent and 45 percent, respectively. Proportion of physicians from Australia and overseas exhibited same pattern in 2006 by standing at 50 percent.
