The table shows the percentage of smokers in males and females between the age of 15 and 20 in Britain. Overall, the percentage increased significantly, with males almost always had a higher number of smokers than females. However, females experienced more dramatic changes over the given period.
In 1970, the percentage of smokers in males were 10%, which was twice as many smokers as compared to females, at 5%. Next, from 1970 to 1985, the percentage of males rose significantly by 27%, which climbed from nearly 10% to 37% in 15 years and reached its highest percentage. After that, there is a decrease of 8% smokers from 1990 to 2000.
The percentage of smokers in females increased dramatically by 24% from 1975 to 1990 and reached its highest percentage of smokers by 37%, which was the first time surpassed males and had more than 1%. After 1990, the percentage remained high but slightly decreased, dropped from 37% to 27% in 10 years. However, the percentage of females smokers was still 1% lower to males, which were 27% compare to 28%.
