The table illustrates the distance that grown-up people travelled by seven different types of transport in 1977 and 2007.
All in all, the car was the most popular transport with the highest distance in two years, while the opposite was true for the motorbike and bike. Furthermore, there was a considerable increase in the use of the car, train, and taxi, whereas the other forms of transport experienced a fall.
In 1977, most people commuted by car, which accounted for 3500 miles, and the car became the most popular mode of travel at that time. This was significantly more than the bus and train, recording 800 and 900 miles, respectively. However, adults walked an average of about 400 miles, and this figure doubled for taxi, which was 200 miles, while the bicycle and motorbike remained at the same level, at an average of 100 miles in that year.
In 2007, the car continued to be the most popular mode of travelling by adults and hit the highest point of 7100 miles. The bus and train accounted for a smaller proportion than the car, which was 1000 and 800 miles, respectively. Besides, travel by walking and bus experienced a decrease to 100 and 300 miles, while the bike and motorbike took up the lowest point which was under 100 miles.
