The given chart compares different means of transport in terms of the average annual distance traveled by adults across two separate years, 1977 and 2007. Units are measured in miles.
Overall, there was an upward trend in the use of cars, trains, and taxis, while the remaining types experienced a decline. What is also notable from the chart is that cars remained the most popular means of transport in both years, whereas bicycles and motorcycles were the least common modes of traveling.
In 1977, with 3500 miles traveled, cars were by far the most common category. This was followed by trains, at 900 miles. Average distance traveled by bus was 800 miles, which is more than double the figure for walking and 4 times as high as that for taxis. Bicycles and motorcycles recorded significantly lower numbers, with 100 miles each.
By 2007, the distance traveled by car exhibited a dramatic increase to 7100 miles, still ranking first. Similarly, the figure for trains and taxis grew to 1000 and 800 miles. On the other hand, walking, bicycles and motorcycles saw a light decline to 300, 80, and 90 miles respectively, while buses recorded a more pronounced drop by 300 miles.
