The table shows the proportion of employees in six different business sectors in Australia from 1989 to 2009. Overall, while the percentage of individuals employed in healthcare, construction, education, and tourism fields experienced an upward trend, with more people worked in healthcare at the end of the period, the reverse was true for manufacturing and retail sectors.
Focusing on the increases first, the percentage of individuals recruited in healthcare started at 9.6% in 1989, a figure that then rose slightly to 11.3% in 2009, making it the largest figure of all in the end. Also, there was a slight increase in the figure for employees in construction to 8.3% from 7.6% in the span of 20 years. Meanwhile, in education, the proportion of workforce rose negligibly from 6.8% to 7.5% over a 20-year period. Additionally, a marginal rise was observed in the percentage of people worked in tourism industry, reaching 7.3% from 5.5% in the span of 20 years.
In contrast, the proportion of employees in manufacturing and retail fields decreased over time, with the former dropping moderately to 9.8% from 15%, making it the largest figure at the start, and the latter declining marginally from 11.8% to 10.1% between 1989 and 2009.
