The table shows information about underground railway systems in six cities around the world. It compares them in terms of the year they were opened, the length of the route and the number of passengers per year.
Overall, it can be seen that older underground systems are generally larger and are used by more people than the newer ones. London, Paris and Tokyo have the oldest and busiest networks.
London has the oldest underground system, which opened in 1863. It also has the longest route, with 394 kilometres. However, Tokyo is the most used system, carrying 1927 million passengers per year, even though its route is shorter at 155 kilometres. Paris has a medium-sized network of 199 kilometres and serves 1191 million passengers annually.
Among the newer systems, Washington DC has the largest network, with 126 kilometres of route and 144 million passengers per year. Kyoto and Los Angeles have much smaller systems. Kyoto is the smallest, with only 11 kilometres of route and 45 million passengers annually, while Los Angeles serves 50 million passengers per year.
