The table presents data on consumer expenditure on various goods and services in Ireland, Italy, Spain, Sweden, and Turkey in 2002. The information is provided in terms of average spending as a percentage of total national consumer expenditure.
Overall, it is clear that the most popular categories for spending in all five countries were food and beverages and tobacco. Conversely, the least amount of expenditure was observed in leisure and education across these countries.
To begin with, consumer spending on food, drinks, and tobacco ranged from 15.77% in Sweden to 32.14% in Turkey. This indicates that Turkey had the highest expenditure in that category, while Sweden had the lowest. Meanwhile, Ireland, Spain, and Italy occupied the second, third, and fourth positions, contributing 28.91%, 18.80%, and 16.36%, respectively.
Additionally, it is notable that the percentage of expenditure by the Irish on clothing and footwear was 6.43%, compared to just 2.21% for leisure and education. In the latter category, the expenditures of Italians, Spaniards, Swedes, and Turks were 9.00%, 6.51%, 5.40%, and 6.63%, respectively, while the percentages for leisure and education were 3.20%, 1.98%, 3.22%, and 4.35%, respectively.
