The table illustrates the proportion of expenditure in Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Spain and Turkey on 3 types of items in 2002.
Overall, all countries spent most on food, drinks and tobacco, which was significantly higher than rates of other items. In contrast, the lowest consumer spending could be seen on leisure and education.
In terms of food, drinks and tobacco Turkey spent the most at 32%, compared to Sweden, which was the least (15%). The percentage of costs in Ireland also high, at 28%. Italy and Spain spent 16% and 18% respectively. On the other hand, the lowest figures were on leisure and education, which accounted for under 5% in all five countries, although the percentage of Turkey’s consumption was 4% which was around double higher than rates of the Spain. In addition, the rates of Italy and Sweden varied slightly, with 3% and 3,22% respectively.
Closing and footwear were the third consumer goods and expenditure of these items were 9% in Italy and 5% in Sweden, and the others remained at approximately 6%.
