The table provides information on the UK’s involvement in various sports, broken down by gender, for the period between 2005/06 and 2008/09. It contains information about three types of sports.
The data reveals gender-based differences in swimming or diving. It is noticeable that the proportion of women interested in water sports is higher than the percentage of men. For instance, in 2005/06, 13.3% of men participated. Subsequently, this number decreased to 12.2% before increasing again to 13 %. Meanwhile, the representation of women remained consistently above 16%. Conversely, cycling and jogging exhibit an inverse trend. These activities demonstrate the lowest levels of popularity among women. Throughout the period spanning 2005/06 to 2008/09, the proportion of female runners remained consistently below 5%. By the way, the percentage of male cyclists increased from 12.7% to 14.4%, while participation in jogging reached 7.6% in 2008/09. Furthermore, the percentage rates of men’s participation in both swimming and cycling were very similar.
In conclusion, an analysis of UK sports participation from 2005/06 to 2008/09, disaggregated by gender, highlights considerable divergence in participation levels.
