Overall, football and swimming have the highest proportion of people involved, compared to golf and yoga, which are less prominent sports throughout each year.
Football was the most popular sport across all years, but it experienced significant decline in each year beginning from 57% in 1999, falling to 52% in 2004 and stabilizing to 48% in 2009. The second prominent sport section is swimming, which initially contained 32% of people involved and this proportion rose to 34% in 2004 and didn’t change in 2009.
Additionally, the average interest was showed in tennis and 25% of Europeans were keen on this sport in 1999, although its proportion rose to 30% in 2004, and by 2009 it reached 33% of European’s interest for this sport.
Regarding the four other sports, golf was the least prominent sport which accounted for 8% in 1999 and rose steadily to 13% in 2004 and then it accomplished 17% in 2009, while volleyball experienced noticeable fluctuations from 70% in 2004, then saw an increase to 20% followed by decrease to 18%. Basketball started with 26% of Europeans and fell to 24% by 2009. Meanwhile, yoga was stable for two periods, comprising of 10% in both years and saw an increase in 2009, achieving 13% of European sport players.
