The table compares the consumption of three staple foods by people in four different nations, namely Cambodia, Poland, Egypt and Mexico, measured in calories per person per day.
Overall, rice is the primary source of calories in Cambodia, whereas wheat accounts for the largest share in both Poland and Egypt. By contrast, maize is by far the most important food source in Mexico, while no maize is consumed at all in Poland.
Looking first at Poland and Egypt, wheat is the main source of nutrients for both countries, accounting for 865 and 1,095 calories per person per day respectively. In Egypt, the number of calories obtained from rice and maize is comparable, although maize contributes slightly more, at 578 calories compared with 501 from rice. While wheat remains the major food source, rice provides only a negligible amount of calories, at just 19 calories per person per day, and no calories are obtained from maize.
Turning to Mexico and Cambodia, the two countries display contrasting dietary habits. In Mexico, maize is the most significant source of calories, accounting for 1,084 calories per person per day. The daily calorie intake from maize is nearly four times higher than that for wheat, standing at 275 calories, while rice contributes only 57 calories. Conversely, Cambodia shows the opposite trend, with rice serving as the principal staple food. Cambodian people consume 1,445 calories from rice per day, a figure that is considerably higher than those for maize and wheat, at 103 and 18 calories respectively.
