The table gives information about the marine fishing industry in a European country. It compares large-scale industrial ships and small-scale fishing boats in terms of four different indicators.
Overall, there are some big differences between the two types of fishing. Small-scale fishing provides jobs for far more people, while industrial ships have higher salaries and catch more fish for industrial purposes. Industrial ships also use much more fuel.
Looking first at the number of employees, there are about 500,000 people working on large industrial ships, compared with 120 million employees in the small-scale fishing sector. In terms of the amount of fish caught for food, the difference is not very large. Large ships catch 29 million tonnes per year, while small boats catch 24 million tonnes. However, industrial ships also catch 22 million tonnes for industrial use, whereas small boats do not catch any fish for this purpose.
There is also a huge difference in annual pay. Workers on industrial ships earn between £25,000 and £350,000, while employees on small fishing boats earn only £200 to £3,000.
Finally, industrial ships use much more fuel, at around 65,000 gallons per year. This is considerably higher than the 8,500 gallons used by small fishing boats.
