The table illustrates the proportions of consumer spending on a range of items in five different countries in 2020.
Overall, Turkey and Ireland had the highest proportions of spending on food, drinks, and tobacco, whereas Italy ranked first in the clothing and footwear category. Turkey also dominated in the leisure and education sector. However, Spain had the lowest spending in this sector.
Moving to a more detailed analysis, the proportion of spending on food, drinks, and tobacco in Turkey was 32%, followed by Ireland with 28%. The remaining countries (Italy, Spain, Sweden) all spent less than 20% in this sector.
With regard to clothing and footwear, Italy ranked first in this category, while Sweden was the lowest spending country. The other countries’ spending was all almost the same (around 6.5%). The percentage of expenditure on leisure and education in Turkey was 4.35%, which was twice as high as in Spain (1.98%). Italy and Sweden spent the same amount of money in this sector, at 3.2%.
