The given table illustrated details about underground transit systems in six large cities namely London, Paris, Tokyo, Washington DC, Kyoto and Los Angeles with three categories such as data opened, length of the route in kilometres and annual passenger figures in millions.
Overall, it can be seen that London’s railway systems had the earliest open date and the highest number of kilometres of routes. Meanwhile, the number of passengers in Tokyo recorded the highest among the six cities.
It is clear that London’s underground railway is the oldest system and also the highest kilometres of distance, at 394km, followed by Paris’s transit system which was established in 1900, with 190km of routes and having 1191 million passengers per year. Although the Tokyo subway was set up in 1927 and only had 155 kilometres of routes, it had the largest number of visitors, around 1928 million people per year among several cities.
Regarding the remaining cities, Washington DC launched in 1976, with 126 kilometres long route and 144 million passengers per year. Conversely, Kyoto underground system commenced operations with the shortest route at 11km, and the fewest passengers, with 45 million annually. Otherwise, the Los Angeles subway was introduced latest in 2001, containing 28 kilometres of track and having only 50 million passengers per year.
