The table compares department stores and online stores in Australia in 2011 across several economic indicators, including the number of businesses, profit, sales revenue, and growth.
Overall, online stores outperformed department stores in all measures. While both categories generated similar profits and revenues, online retailers were significantly more numerous and showed slightly higher growth rates.
In terms of market presence, online stores dominated with a total of 368 businesses, compared to just 67 department stores – over five times as many. Despite this disparity in numbers, the financial figures for both types of retailers were surprisingly close. The average profit was 863 Australian dollars for online businesses, while department stores averaged 807 Australian dollars, resulting in a modest difference of only about 7%.
A similar trend is apparent in sales revenue, as online stores generated approximately 13,400 AUD, slightly exceeding the 12,700 AUD reported by department stores. Growth rates were low for both categories, but online stores still maintained a slight advantage with a growth rate of 0.6% compared to 0.4% for department stores.
