The table compares department stores and online stores in terms of the number of businesses, profit, sales revenue, and growth in Australia in 2011.
Overall, online stores performed slightly better than department stores across all economic indicators. Although both categories generated similar profits and revenue, online retailers were far more numerous and demonstrated marginally higher growth.
In terms of business presence, online stores dominated the retail market, numbering 368 compared with just 67 department stores – over five times as many. Despite this disparity, the financial figures for both types of shops were remarkably close. The average profit stood at 863 Australian dollars for online businesses and 807 for department stores, a modest difference of only about 7%.
A similar pattern can be seen in sales revenue, where online stores earned approximately 13,400 AUD, slightly surpassing the 12,700 recorded by department stores. Growth rates were low for both categories, though online stores still maintained a small lead, with 0.6% compared to 0.4%.
