TThe table illustrates the total amount of waste produced, in million tonnes, in six countries between 1988, 1992, and 2000. Overall, the United States consistently generated the highest volume of waste, while Scotland produced the least. Most countries experienced an upward trend, although some showed fluctuations over the period.
In 1988, the United States produced 107 million tonnes, which rose steadily to 150 million tonnes in 1992 and 209 million tonnes by 2000. Similarly, Canada and Japan recorded high levels, increasing from 20 to 29 million tonnes and 15 to 25 million tonnes, respectively.
By contrast, Ireland and Poland showed fluctuating trends. Ireland rose from 10 million tonnes in 1988 to 16 million in 1992, then fell to 9.9 million in 2000, whereas Poland dropped sharply to 2.89 million in 1992 before climbing to 18 million in 2000. Scotland remained the lowest throughout, rising slightly from 3 to 5 million tonnes.
