The table compares the number of universities in five countries that were ranked among the top 200 in the world in 2011 for three subjects: biology, medicine and psychology.
Overall, the USA had the highest number of top-ranked universities in all three subjects, while New Zealand had the lowest figures. The United Kingdom was second in each category, whereas Australia and Canada had similar numbers.
Regarding the two leading countries, the USA was far ahead of the others. It had 69 universities in biology, which was more than double the figure for the UK at 30. In medicine, the number for the USA was 54, compared with 24 in the United Kingdom. A similar pattern can be seen in psychology, where the USA had 58 universities and the UK had 29.
As for the remaining countries, Australia and Canada showed comparable results. In biology, both countries had 9 universities in the top 200. Canada performed slightly better in medicine, with 12 institutions, while Australia had 13. In psychology, Australia ranked higher with 17 universities, compared with 14 in Canada. By contrast, New Zealand had the smallest numbers in all three subjects, with only 6 in biology, 2 in medicine and 4 in psychology.
