The tables display data on the trading of two Fairtrade-named commodities; coffee and bananas in five countries in Europe for the years 1999 and 2004.
Overall, sales of coffee increased the most in the year 2004 in the UK and the other four nations had a moderate rise in sales. On the other hand, Switzerland achieved the highest trade for bananas in both concerned years whereas the trading in Sweden and Denmark decreased.
Transaction of fairtrade coffee was the highest for Switzerland in 1999 and the lowest for Sweden, the values being 3 and 0.8 million euros, respectively. After 5 years, however, there was a significant rise in coffee sales in the UK, resulting in UK taking the top place for coffee trade with a jaw-dropping value of 20 million euros. Sweden kept its place intact in 2004, still being the last country in the trades of coffee. The other nations, Denmark and Belgium showed only the slightest increase as compared to UK.
For bananas, Switzerland came on top for both the years 1999 and 2004, increasing over thrice in amount, from 15 to 47 million euros. Although Belgium had the lowest transaction during 1999 (0.6 million euros), its situation improved in 2004 (4 million euros). Denmark and Sweden, however, showed a fall in sales during 2004. There was a drop of 0.8 million euros for Sweden in 5 years (from 1.8 to 1 million euros) and a significant drop of 1.1 million euros for Denmark in the mentioned time period (2 to 0.9 million euros).
