The tables provide data on the sales of Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas in five European countries (UK, Switzerland, Denmark, Belgium, and Sweden) for the years 1999 and 2004. The figures are presented in millions of euros.
Overall, the sales of both Fairtrade-labelled coffee and bananas increased in most of the countries over the five-year period. Notably, the UK experienced a significant rise in coffee sales, while Switzerland led in banana sales.
In 1999, Switzerland had the highest coffee sales at 3 million euros, followed by Denmark at 1.8 million euros. The UK, Belgium, and Sweden had lower sales at 1.5 million, 1 million, and 0.8 million euros, respectively. By 2004, the UK saw a dramatic increase in sales, reaching 20 million euros, the highest among the five countries. Switzerland’s sales doubled to 6 million euros, while Denmark’s sales saw a slight increase to 2 million euros. Belgium’s sales rose to 1.7 million euros, and Sweden’s sales remained relatively stable at 1 million euros.
Switzerland dominated banana sales in both years, starting at 15 million euros in 1999 and tripling to 47 million euros in 2004. The UK also saw a substantial increase, from 1 million euros in 1999 to 5.5 million euros in 2004. Belgium’s sales grew from 0.6 million to 4 million euros over the same period. Conversely, Sweden and Denmark experienced a decline in banana sales. Sweden’s sales dropped slightly from 1.8 million to 1 million euros, while Denmark saw a more pronounced decrease from 2 million to 0.9 million euros.
