The tables compare the number of university exchange students between Australia and several European countries in 2007 and 2009.
Overall, more students from Europe went to Australia than the other way round, and the number of European students increased slightly over the period, while the total of Australian students going to Europe remained unchanged. France consistently had the largest share of exchanges in both directions, while Germany recorded the most significant growth.
In terms of European students studying in Australia, France and the Netherlands remained stable at around 61 and 36 students, respectively. By contrast, Germany showed a dramatic rise, more than doubling from 27 to 62 students. Sweden also increased slightly, from 34 to 42 students, whereas the UK declined from 31 to 26.
Looking at the flow in the opposite direction, France again hosted the highest number of Australians, rising from 37 in 2007 to 58 in 2009. Germany also experienced an increase, from 18 to 26 students. However, the remaining destinations became less popular: Sweden fell from 33 to 27, the UK from 32 to 23, and the Netherlands from 32 to just 18 students.
