In 1800, the total population of the New York City had a relatively small of 79,216 people. This number rose rapidly to around 3,4million by 1900. By the end of the period, in 2000, the population had grown further to just over 8 million, showing rapid urban expansion across two centuries.
By contrast, Manhattan followed different pattern. Its population increased substannially from 60,515 in 1800 to a peak of 1,850,093 on 1900, before it had changed and declined to 1,538,096 by 2000. As a result the proportion of Manhettans inhabitants fell from 76 to 19 persantage. Meanwhile,other five districts rose steadly and accounted for vasr magorityof New York by the end of the period.
