I hope you are doing well! I’m writing this letter to give you a brief introduction on how New Year is celebrated every year in my country. In China, we normally wouldn’t celebrate the New Year on January 1st. Instead, the lunar calendar will set the New Year’s day different from the usual calendar. Normally, the New Year will be celebrated in February so the usual January 1st is not the date we celebrate the New Year on.
If my momeries serve me correct, I remember that you also asked me about the significance of the New Year. I would certainly be glad to fill you in on the significance. This year, 2024, marks the dragon year. Dragon, in Chinese zodiac signs, symbolizes strengthes and power. When we celebrate the new year, we generally believe that the animal of the year would bring people good fortune and wealth. As a side note, word says that we could build a connection with our ancestors in the past if we celebrate the new year in a grandiose way. All in all, the more the merrier.
During the Chinese New Year, most families will have a family gathering where people cook gourmet such as spring rolls and meat balls. What I really like is the salty fillings of the spring rolls. In northern part of China, especially where I come from, people would prefer a salty fillings whereas people from the south would choose a sweetier flavor. After the meals, families will come home and watch the annual celebration show on their TVs if they go to their relatives’ houses for the meal. At the end of the show, hosts on that show will come to the stage, asking people to make a wish for the new year. And this will conclude the celebration of the New Year.
