The two maps illustrate the evolution of the infrastructure in the city from the past 2000 to the present.
Overall, It has undergone substantial redevelopment, with several new facilities such as hall of residence, new shopping center, bars and clubs, restaurant and bike rental scheme being added.
In 2000, the university was located in the northern part of the city. The north-east side of the area was occupied by trees, while the western side was taken up by an old market and a train station, situated near the city center. Additionally, the road was paved over between the two parts of Nelson, which had been used only by cars. The port was contained along the river on the north side of the road.
In recent years significant developments have occurred. According to the present map, the shape of the city remains a rectangle, and has not been expanded, while significant changes have happened in infrastructure. For instance, the hall of the residence has been added next to the university, while the train station was demolished and relocated to the front area of the city center. The old market has been replaced by the new shop, while the modernised version of it has been relocated on the other side of the city center. The trees have been pulled down and replaced by the new shopping center. Restaurant, bars and clubs have been constructed along the river. The road which used to be only for cars has been modernised and currently is used by pedestrians. Furthermore, the new traimline has connected the university and city center where the bike rental schme has been opened.
