The maps illustrate how the city of Nelson has changed from 2000 to the present day. Overall, the area has undergone significant redevelopment, with new facilities added, transportation improved, and the port area transformed into a recreational zone.

In 2000, the northern part of the city contained a university and some trees, while a small train station was located to the west of the city centre. To the south of the central area, there was an old market, and the port area contained no major facilities.

Today, several notable developments have taken place. A hall of residence has been built next to the university, and the old train station has been replaced with a modern one. Additionally, a new shopping centre has been constructed to the east of the university. The old market has disappeared and been replaced with a covered market situated to the southeast of the city centre. A bike rental scheme now surrounds the central area, improving transport options.

The most dramatic change is in the port area, which is now a pedestrian-only zone featuring restaurants, bars, and clubs, transforming it into a social and entertainment hub.
