Admittedly, the quality of life is increasing, and this seems to have a more profound impact on urban areas than rural regions, which can provoke the rural population and increase the level of inequality in wealth and other resources, causing urban migration. To ensure that individuals living in the countryside have access to the same opportunity as urban dwellers do, decentralization should be promoted, fostering inclusive growth and equitable resource distribution.

In cities, people enjoy a wide range of opportunities and amenities, a situation that is rarely observed in rural regions. This disparity causes societal unrest and poses several problems for countries, like labor strikes and protests, which put strain on national economies. Take China as an example. In China, there was a surge in the labor protests back in 2023 due to economic challenges in remote areas, specifically 777 protests. This figure was nearly 10 times higher than reported in 2022, according to “Voice of America(voanews.com).”

Rural depopulation is another issue associated with this trend. Individuals in urban centers have more chances to earn significant revenue due to the abundance of employment opportunities, an event that widens the level of pay disparity. Uzbekistan is a clear example, where a well-known IELTS instructor earns around $1500 in rural areas, while their counterparts make nearly 5-10 times more in large cities. This scenario urges people to move to cities, where they can have access to advanced resources like education, work, and healthcare, leading to overpopulation in urban locations.

To address all of these issues, decentralization should be encouraged. “Decentralization” is shifting power and resources to local authorities rather than central ones. If local governments were to be responsible for the allocation of money and other facilities for their own regions, they could distribute every necessary provision and meet everyone’s needs with ease. In this way, governments can avoid societal upheaval and maintain peace. By taking this step, even in rural areas, the standard of living can be as good as in cities. This is because local authorities can address issues that are specific to their areas, whereas when there is a central government, it may struggle to give individual attention to every region within a country.

In conclusion, in the process of improving the standard of living, cities tend to benefit more as opposed to rural locations. This trend might trigger issues like societal upheaval and contribute to the level of inequality. However, all of these problems can be tackled through the distribution of power to local authorities.
