Band 6+: A government has a responsibility to its citizens to ensure their safety. Therefore, some people think that the government should increase spending on defense but spend less on social benefits. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The debate surrounding the government budget allocation is controversial, particularly when it is relevant to the balance between defense expenditure and social welfare programs. Supporters of increasing defense spending argue that national security is the most important aspect, suggesting that enhanced military resources ensure citizens’ safety. In contrast, others claim that social benefits are equally vital for the complete well-being of society.

Supporters for strengthening defense spending retain that a secure nation is the fundamental of growing economy and a peaceful society. By diverting financial resources to defense, the government could prevent aggression, therefore ensuring a stable environment is beneficial for economic and social development.

However, the argument for decreasing social welfare to enlarge defense spending leaves out the complication of citizen comfort. Complete social benefits, including healthcare, education, and unemployment support. Play a significant role in contributing to a resilient society. A healthy and educated people are fundamental not only for individual prosperity but also for national security. Good citizens are less vulnerable to radicalization and social conflict. Moreover, extreme military spending can lead to social inequalities and dissatisfaction. Funds that could enhance public health and improve infrastructure rather than be allocated to defense expenditure. For that reason, a wise allocation of resources at the same time enhances national security while ensuring important social services is critical.

To summarize, meanwhile, the government’s responsibility to protect its citizens is undeniable, a singular focus on escalating defense expenditure at the cost of social benefits can cause significant risks to social stability and unity. A dual approach that ensures durable national security and endowed social welfare is important to encourage a tough and harmonious society.
