Band 8+: All university students should do some voluntary work to help the local community. To what do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

One school of thought holds that all undergraduates should engage in voluntary work to support the local community. Personally, I mostly agree with this view, due to the potential for social skills development and the societal benefits. However, I believe that not all students should engage in voluntary activities.

The primary rationale for my belief is the substantial opportunities for personal growth. Specifically, since volunteer projects typically involve teamwork tasks, volunteers have to collaborate and communicate effectively to complete their duties. By the same token, during volunteer projects, students might encounter several circumstances and challenges, which can facilitate their problem-solving skills and critical thinking. These skills are undeniably beneficial in the long run, especially when it comes to adapting to unpredictable changes in the future job market.

Furthermore, while students enhance their employability, society simultaneously benefits from their actions. Although there have been a multitude of volunteer works, there is still a lack of projects to address all social issues. If all university students engaged in these activities, community projects would have adequate human resources to mitigate the impact of social problems. For example, pollution in large areas can be mitigated significantly if there are enough volunteers to pick up litter and plant trees.

However, it is important to acknowledge that some students might not have sufficient time for voluntary activities. In some rigorous fields, such as IT or medicine, it is common that undergraduates have to spend a significant amount of time and effort to strive for excellence in their fields. If these students reduce their study time to engage in voluntary work, their academic performance could suffer. Furthermore, some individuals have part-time jobs, which might be indispensable for them in paying their bills or education fees, leading to a lack of time to be allocated to volunteering.

In conclusion, I largely concur that university students should volunteer to cultivate social skills and assist their local community in addressing social issues. Yet, due to heavy course work or part-time jobs, not all students have the ability to engage in voluntary works.
