Although it is usually prohibited, physical punishment is still popular in many nations around the world, with some feeling that parents should be allowed to penalize their children in such a way. I completely disagree with this statement, as it can breed severe consequences, including mental health issues.
One of the most significant drawbacks of physical disciplining is that such a way of punishment may cause serious emotional damage to children. Children who are constantly physically punished may suffer from fear and long-term psychological damage, leaving significant emotional scars on them. For example, if a child is physically punished for making a mistake, he or she may fear admitting future mistakes, fearing more punishment. This, in turn, causes serious anxiety and trust issues in their relationship with others. Conversely, if children were not seriously penalized for making mistakes, their attitude and behavior towards others, especially parents, would be much better, consequently improving the relationships and creating strong bonds between them.
Another important reason why this way of punishment should be prohibited and not practiced by parents has to do with promoting violence. Children who are physically punished may take it as a normal and acceptable act in order to solve issues and handle conflicts. For instance, a child who is slapped for doing something dangerous may feel that it is totally okay to do the same when other kids commit severe mistakes. As a result, they may copy such behavior and use it in their adult life towards their own children, thereby spreading violence to the next generation. However, if parents punished them through different methods like time-outs and verbal warnings, children’s perception of physical punishment would be negative.
In conclusion, although some people believe that parents should have the right to practice physical punishment, I would argue that this should be totally prohibited, since it causes serious emotional damage and fosters violence to the future generation.
