Band 8+: Although many people value their public parks, this space could be better used for other purposes such as residential areas for the ever growing population or to develop business and boost economies. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this?

In today’s rapidly developing world, the value of public areas is being unoticed. Some believe community parks could be better used for alternative purposes such as housing to address the demand of the population or for business development. However, I strongly disagree with this perspective for several reasons.

The primary reason why I oppose replacing parks with commercial projects is the negative impact on current local residents. Creating more housing units in close proximity can exacerbate noise due to the overpopulation. In addition, the rise of residential buildings often results in severe traffic congestion, even in previously quiet neighborhoods. Moreover, erecting business facilities frequently discharge waste into local areas, therefore bringing about health risks to inhabitants via the air and water use. A notable example is China’s experience, where rapid industrialization has led to severe air pollution, especially in cities like Beijing. The excessive emissions from factories and coal-powered plants have resulted in hazardous smog, which can cause respiratory diseases such as asthma and lung cancer among people.

Another reason is that the benefits of public spaces, especially parks, outweigh the potential advantages of repurposing them. Community parks enhance both physical and mental health of all citizens, from children to the elderly. It is a green place for sport activities as well as to connect with people around. For instance, children often play outdoor games together in parks, while many adults and elderly prefer jogging and cycling in this area. Moreover, the presence of lush greenery not only provides a fresh, environmentally friendly environment but also helps people get closer to nature. Therefore, citizens could reduce stress and escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life, promoting their relaxation.

In conclusion, although some advocate for transforming public parks into other useful amenities, I firmly believe that it is not a good idea. The drawbacks of boosting the businesses are seriously harmful to public health and quality of life. Therefore, preserving green parks should remain a priority to ensure a balanced lifestyle for citizens as well as a sustainable urban environment.
