In the modern era, a number of people taking part in plastic surgery are on the rise. While some several factors such as societal beauty standards and people’s trust in cutting-edge medical facilities are ascribed to this trend, I wholeheartedly believe that this is an overall negative trend for individuals and society.
Granted, there exist some compelling reasons to explain why the popularity of cosmetic surgery is associated with human’s desire for beauty and more safer conditions for them. With the proliferation of the internet, especially mass media, majority of residents are highly vulnerable to the influence of idealized beauty standard, which frequently edited celebrities images. All of these, in turn, force people to compare themselves with unrealistic beauty standards, thereby choosing to undergo plastic surgeries. For example, plain-looking citizens are likely to be faced with higher unemployment problems, especially in service industry where the exterior appearance is a key to their promotions in career pathway. Therefore, cosmetic surgery can effectively minimize appearance-based discrimination for many people. Furthermore, the advancement of technology secure safer conditions for individuals which is often widespread through social media and beauty news, which consequently make people more reassured. The desire to beauty in parallel with human’s geater confidence with plastic surgeries are precursors to for the increase in the number of people undergoing cosmetic surgeries.
However, I am more convinced that this trend can be by far more negative trend on the grounds that these medical surgeries are associated with their potential for damages in physical health as well as a sense of anxiety and stress within society. Dissatisfaction with their appearance is a major contributor to repeated cosmetic procedure. This primarily results in the fact that heavily emphasizing on their external beauty can put financial constraints on themselves due to cost incurred during the surgery and recovery. Once people have to undergo prolonged exposure to anxiety about their appearance as well as financial burdens, it can have an adverse bearing on their mental capacities, thereby lowering their wellbeing. Moreover, repeated altering their body structures not only can increase medical risks exponentially but also can wreak havoc on their physical health, specifically tissue damagea and structure collapse. In the long run, such physical health issues can negatively impact on their daily activies at work or at school.
In conclusion, the influence of mass media on beauty standards and technology lay the foundations for the popularity of plastic surgery. Therefore, I strongly reaffirm that this is an overall negative development due to their abilities to put financial security and their mentall well-being at risk as well as physical damages’ effect on their daily activities.
