Globally, an increasing number of grown-ups have begun working from the comfort of their houses, with their kids also starting to study from home due to the easily accessible learning material from the internet. I believe this to be a negative development because of the harm that devices could cause to their eyes and the distractions that could affect their focus.
Working from home has been proven to be a major cause of laziness due to the lack of professional vibe and the absence of one’s manager and colleagues. This could lead to frequent breaks and shorter focus periods, which in turn reduces efficiency and innovation. Additionally, certain jobs such as doctors and construction workers require physical work and can’t be digitised. The corona outbreak led to several adults working from home and in this period, 83% of multi-national companies reported a decline in productivity.
Although this is also partially the case for young pupils, the main issue is their attention span. Social media has always been a huge contributor to a short attention span and continues to do so, preventing students to study attentively. With increasing concerns over screen time and social media usage, studying from home is only going to cause more damage to their eyes. A study by the University of Illinois showed that online classes had a detrimental effect on students’ grades as around 72% of A+ students started getting B’s and C’s when they returned back to physical school.
In conclusion, I believe that the benefits of working from home are overshadowed by its drawbacks as providing an employee or student with too much control could negatively affect their work and health.
