Band 7+: As housing is a basic need for people, government should provide free housing for everyone who cannot afford it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Opinions are divided on whether authorities should take responsibility for providing free housing for those in need. While this approach may offer certain advantages, I believe the drawbacks outweigh the benefits.

Admittedly, there are advantages when people have access to shelter during times of need, including increased productivity and reduced crime rates. Regarding the former, stable housing is likely to improve productivity as individuals can focus more on their work without the stress of unstable living conditions. This productivity boost can significantly contribute to the prosperity of a country. In terms of crime reduction, providing basic needs such as housing can prevent desperate individuals from resorting to criminal activities. Thus, government-provided housing can serve as a foundation of support for those in need.

However, despite these benefits, offering free housing also brings significant downsides. For individuals, free accommodations can foster dependency and discourage efforts to work independently. This dependency might lead to heavy reliance on government support, placing a strain on social welfare systems. Another concern is the limited budget available to governments. Administrations must allocate funds responsibly across various sectors such as education and healthcare in addition to social welfare. Therefore, providing free housing could strain national finances and create imbalance in budgetary priorities.

In conclusion, while providing free housing may offer some immediate advantages, its potential negative impacts on budget limitation and individual dependency are more substantial. Therefore, offering free housing to those unable to afford it may not be a sustainable solution.
