Band 8+: As languages such as English, Spanish and Mandarin become more widely spoken, there is a fear that many minority languages may die out. Some countries have taken steps to protect minority languages. What is your view of this practice?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It can be observed that some languages such as English, Spanish, and Mandarin are spoken by many people in the world. On the other hand, concerns have arisen regarding the possibility of the disappearance of numerous minority languages. As a result, several countries have implemented measures to defend them against extinction. This would undoubtedly be beneficial since preserving minority languages is crucial for maintaining cultural diversity and identity.

While the dominance of major languages such as English facilitates global communication, it is essential to recognize the value of linguistic diversity. Each language carries a unique cultural heritage that encompasses various aspects of a society’s culture, history, and tradition. It is profoundly precious and deserves recognition to be familiar with the stories and the culture woven into a minority language and inherited from past generations. They should be maintained in the present and be passed on to the future.

In addition, languages are more than communication tools. They connect people to their roots or origins and shape their identities, defining a sense of belonging. Losing a language can lead to a sense of isolation and a disconnection from cultural heritage.

Two factors contributing to the decline of minority languages are globalization and technological advancements, creating a predominantly English-speaking culture. In fact, the digitalization of languages has shifted the focus toward major languages, leaving minor ones at risk. While eliminating technology and globalization is not feasible due to their benefits, countries should promote multilingualism to encourage respect for minority languages and shape an inclusive society since as with other human rights, linguistic rights are essential to be favored.
