The educational process aims to acquire fundamental knowledge and develop soft skills to help children succeed in life. Rewarding students through positive means like praising or rewarding is effective in making the students achieve more in school than through punishment. I believe that this method is more preferable in a learning environment.
Rewarding scholars for their success can boost their motivation and self-esteem, leading to an improvement in their school performance. This means that it is necessary to create these rewards in a proper way so that children would love to learn, not only taking it as a competition. This may require acknowledging growth with accomplishment or proposing bonuses that enrich the academic achievement. For example at our school, for excellent work throughout the term or grandiose performance in the Olympiad, we are taken for interesting tours or we gain extra points which acts as incentive to learn.
On the other hand, using punishment in terms of discipline can negatively affect their attitude and educational performance because of the feeling that they are supposedly left abandoned. Punishing students gives them attention that they want but temporarily which leads to worse behavior. If a child loses motivation, they could start hating school and become demotivated in outschool activities or being upset even at home. For instance, Ukraine experiences schooling loss and one of the factors is inappropriate teaching methods which takes away desire of studying among many youngsters who go to school just to meet friends.
In conclusion, reward-based policy is a more effective approach to encourage students to learn. However, this system should be organized in a proper way to bring essential benefits into school life, not just making it a mark-chasing rule.
