Band 8+: Children in rural areas are being left behind in their academic development. Why is this the case? What solutions can you suggest?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The issue of academic development for children in rural areas has long been a concern in many countries. From the lack of teaching resources to ill-equipped teachers, there are several reasons why children in rural areas show a considerable gap of development compared to children in urban areas. However, these factors are all symptomatic of a bigger problem: funding, or a lack thereof. This essay will discuss the main reasons for this problem and suggest some possible solutions.

The most important reason why children in rural areas fall behind academically is the unequal distribution of funding. Rural schools often receive less financial resources than those in urban areas, making it difficult to maintain modern facilities, purchase up-to-date learning materials, and provide students with access to technology. In addition, these schools struggle to retain qualified teachers because salaries are less competitive and opportunities are limited. As a result, students are taught in environments that lack both the physical resources and the experience which is necessary for effective learning, placing them at a disadvantage from an early age.

To address these issues, governments must prioritise investment in rural education. Greater funding should be allocated to improve school infrastructure, supply digital devices and reliable internet access, and ensure that learning materials are the same standard as those available in cities. Furthermore, benefits such as higher salaries, housing allowances, and professional development opportunities could encourage experienced teachers to work in remote communities. Partnerships with universities and online learning platforms could also provide rural students with access to specialist teachers and a wider range of subjects, reducing the educational divide between rural and urban areas.

In conclusion, the academic underachievement of children in rural areas is mainly caused by a lack of funding, which contributes to poor facilities, limited educational resources, and difficulties in recruiting skilled teachers. By increasing financial support and introducing policies that improve both learning environments and help keep teachers in rural schools, governments can ensure that children receive a high-quality education regardless of where they live.
