Band 7+: Doing an enjoyable activity with a child can develop better skills and more creativity than reading. To what extent do you agree? Use reasons and specific examples to explain your answer.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Parents all over the globe invest time in reading to their children as a means to prepare them for school, where their literacy skills are further honed. Nevertheless, recent studies propose that an excessive focus on reading at an early age may have adverse effects, and engaging in enjoyable activities could prove to be more advantageous. I am a firm proponent of this viewpoint, and the advantages of this approach will be expounded upon in the subsequent discussion.

One pivotal rationale for this stance is that there is no fixed age for developing reading skills, and pressuring young children to acquire this ability before they are emotionally and mentally prepared could have negative consequences. For instance, in the UK, a substantial number of boys exhibit reluctance towards reading, potentially as a result of being compelled to engage in reading activities, which subsequently dampened their interest in reading. By diverting attention towards other activities and fostering skills such as creativity and imagination, children are more likely to swiftly acquire reading skills when they are developmentally prepared.

Additionally, it is imperative to recognize the significance of fostering creativity and nurturing a child’s imagination. Through play, youngsters cultivate social and cognitive skills. For instance, they are more inclined to absorb vocabulary through contextual experiences rather than through rote learning from books.

Moreover, engaging in play enables children to develop emotionally and enhance their self-confidence. There is no empirical evidence indicating that early-age reading is indispensable for a child’s holistic development; on the contrary, studies have revealed that the opposite holds true. In Finland, early childhood education prioritizes play-based learning, with reading only being promoted if a child demonstrates genuine interest in developing this skill. This self-directed approach has not led to a decline in the reading abilities of Finnish students compared to their counterparts in other countries. In fact, Finland was ranked sixth globally in terms of reading proficiency.

Despite advocating for a reduced emphasis on reading at a young age, I firmly advocate for the continuation of bedtime storytelling as a part of a child’s daily routine. However, regular daytime reading activities should be substituted with activities that facilitate the development of various other skills in children.
