Band 8+: Environmental protection should be the responsibility of politicians, not individuals as individuals can do too little. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a common belief that the responsibility of protecting the environment should lie with politicians because individuals have limited capacity to make a significant impact. While individuals can indeed contribute to environmental preservation, I strongly support the notion that politicians have the potential to make a substantial difference due to their authority in enacting and enforcing policies and their ability to allocate resources, which can greatly influence environmental protection.

Individuals, although playing a role in environmental conservation at a smaller scale, can adopt more environmentally-friendly approaches in their daily choices and actions, such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable practices. These individual efforts can alleviate some pressures on the government. However, the scale of environmental challenges often necessitates systemic changes that extend beyond individual efforts, highlighting the crucial role of politicians and government bodies.

Primarily, governments, through their elected politicians, can establish laws to regulate harmful environmental practices carried out by individuals. Such legislation can protect natural resources, mitigate pollution, conserve biodiversity, and promote sustainable development. These laws often set standards, guidelines, and penalties to deter and discourage detrimental activities that can harm the environment. Without these laws, it is highly improbable that individuals would prioritize environmental protection consistently.

Furthermore, politicians have access to funds and resources to tackle environmental degradation. They can allocate funds for research, invest in renewable energy, and establish protected areas. Although private entities such as companies like Tesla are striving to improve the environment by making electric cars more accessible, the government can have a broader and potentially faster impact.

In conclusion, despite the role of individuals in environmental protection, I am of the opinion that it is politicians who can bring about a lasting and extensive impact. They have the capacity to enact laws that promote environmental awareness and possess the necessary resources, such as funds, to implement more effective measures for protecting the environment.
