Band 5+: Government investment in the arts, such as music and theatre, is a waste of money. Governments must invest this money in public services instead. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this statement?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It is often argued that the government should not spend budgets on arts, and the budgets should be allocated to other fields. From my perspective, it seems absurd since investing in arts is very necessary for both the government and public.

To begin with, I accept that spending the public fund on important things other than arts sounds reasonable. First, there are a lot of issues that the government have to solve urgently other than arts. For example, if the authorities can allocate the budgets to solve problems such as poverty of old people, education for children and avoiding citizens from crimes. Moreover, budgets for arts can be easily spent inappropriately. To be specific, budgets should be allocated according to productivity while measuring the productivity of arts is difficult. In other word, It is easy to stop using money on useless public sectors for the unproductive output, but it is hard to do the same for arts.

Nevertheless, I am convinced that investing to art is useful and the government should spend fund on arts. First of all, arts can make the countries famous, which offer a lot of benefits to country economically. When a country’s arts boost their name value for the world, a lot of foriegnors visit the country, meaning that the states can get huge tourism profit. For example, K-pop has became so popular that a lot of tourists are visiting South Korea. Also, art is invaluable thing itself, because the art can make people treat their emotion easily and become mature adults. For example, some depressed people can express their feeling deeply and relieve them through art therapy. Additionally, children learn and experience diverse societies indirectly from arts such as fairy tales, animations, and films, which makes children improve their symphathy.

In conclusion, even though some people claim that using money on arts is waste, it is clear that investing the government fund in arts makes the country economically and socially advantageous. Hence, the government should make budgets for arts continuously.
