Band 7+: Government should spend more money on medical research to protect citizens’ health rather than on protecting the environment. Do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Public health and the environment have always been extremely contentious concerns in recent years. One school of thought holds that the government should allocate funds primarily to medical treatments to improve individuals’ health instead of environmental protection. From my perspective, I am in partial agreement with this viewpoint, as this situation can be nuanced.

On the one hand, there are several reasons why some proponents of the former perspective argue that the government should put more financial resources into the healthcare sector. By investing in cutting-edge facilities or equipment and innovating new vaccines or cures, citizens can benefit significantly, enhancing the quality of humans’ lives. This can lead to a reduction in healthcare costs and effectively cure diseases. Additionally, it helps impede the widespread pandemics. The fact is that densely populated areas tend to see more infectious diseases, which pose a threat to humanity’s health. Take the Covid-19 epidemic as a relevant example. With the rapid increase in Covid-19 infected cases and deaths, urgent action from the government worldwide invested heavily in medical research to develop advanced vaccines in record time, significantly reducing the mortality rate and controlling the virus’s spread. Without these medical breakthroughs, the consequences have been far more devastating, underscoring the importance of prioritizing healthcare funding.

However, despite giving priority to health-care systems, the governments ought to undertake the responsibility of allocating substantial funds on preserving our ecosystems. Initially, it positively impacts individuals’ long-term health. When the governments spend large amounts of money to protect the environment, they improve systems for purifying water, maintaining clean air and preserving green spaces, all of which are essential for long-term health. This can lead to the prevention of numerous health issues caused by environmental factors. Moreover, fiscal allocations should be channeled towards environmental issues to help mitigate the effects of climate change, which threaten humanity’s well-being. By investing in sustainable infrastructure and environmental protection, the governments can enhance community resilience and decline the vulnerability of populations to climate-related health threats. To elaborate, The United Nations Environment Programme ( UNEP) has been instrumental in driving significant environmental improvements. UNEF initiated efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and adapt to climate change impacts. Through UNEP’s support, many countries have protected their citizens from the adverse health effects related to climate change.

In conclusion,I firmly opine that the authorities ought to allocate equal financial resources to both health-related studies and environmental preservation. This balanced approach is crucial for ensuring the sustainable development and well-being of society.
