Band 8+: In many countries, a small number of people have extremely high annual incomes. These people should be required to pay a much higher rate of income tax. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

In many countries, the issue of income tax is highly debated. Some people believe that individuals with extremely high annual incomes should pay a much higher rate of tax, while others argue that all citizens should be taxed equally. In my opinion, a progressive taxation system, where wealthier people contribute more, is a fairer approach that benefits society as a whole. This essay will discuss both perspectives in detail.

To begin with, individuals who earn exceptionally high incomes should contribute more in taxes because they often benefit more from government resources. For instance, large companies use public infrastructure such as roads, electricity, and communication networks to operate their businesses. They may also cause environmental damage by constructing factories and polluting air and water. Therefore, it is reasonable for these firms and high earners to pay higher taxes, as they are more responsible for exploiting public resources and should give back for the welfare of society.

On the other hand, some people believe that imposing higher taxes on the wealthy is unfair. They argue that many individuals work extremely hard to achieve financial success, and taking a large portion of their earnings in taxes might discourage them from working even harder or investing in the economy. For example, if nearly half of someone’s income is taken away as tax, their motivation to innovate or expand their business may decrease. From this perspective, taxing everyone at the same rate is seen as a way to ensure equality.

However, a completely equal tax system does not take into account the differences in people’s financial situations. Those with lower incomes may struggle to meet their basic needs if they are required to pay the same proportion of tax as the wealthy. In contrast, affluent individuals can still maintain a comfortable lifestyle even after contributing a higher share. Thus, progressive taxation not only reduces the financial burden on poorer citizens but also allows governments to collect more revenue to improve healthcare, education, and infrastructure for the entire population.

In conclusion, although equal tax rates may appear fair at first glance, they often disadvantage people with lower incomes. I strongly believe that high-income earners should pay higher taxes because they make greater use of government resources and can afford to contribute more. A progressive tax system is the most balanced way to reduce inequality and support national development.
