Positive And Negative

Band 8+: In many countries, more and more people are competing for a place to study in universities. Why does this happen? Do you think this is a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In recent years, an increasing number of individuals have been competing for limited spots in universities around the world. In this essay, I will analyze the main reasons behind this phenomenon and explain why I believe it is a positive development.

There are several reasons why many universities have become a challenge for people. The first reason is that prestigious universities offer degrees that are highly valued by employers, significantly increasing graduates’ chances of securing well-paid and stable jobs. For example, a degree from institutions like Oxford or MIT can open doors to multinational corporations or advanced research opportunities. Another reason is that studying at a top university offers a better education for individuals. Some people who want to enhance their knowledge and academic skills view it as a means to acquire valuable information, better courses, and enrich students’ learning experiences in their subjects.

This trend provides many benefits for individuals, especially high school students. Firstly, expanding access to universities helps reduce the gap between rich and poor people. Educational opportunities will be the same for both urban and rural residents, enabling people from greater distances to enhance their future lives through contact with others from universities that offer good conditions for study and jobs. Secondly, the more challenging the university entrance criteria, the higher the quality of college students. High school students will elevate their studies to gain university admission; therefore, the university will attract better students, contributing to its reputation as a suitable place for achieving many successes. Additionally, it also helps countries develop further by increasing government budgets and international achievements.

In conclusion, the growing competition for university placements is mainly from the desire for better prospects and superior education quality. Overall, I hold the belief that this trend can be considered a positive development, as it promotes equal access to education and motivates students to strive for academic excellence.
