In this era of globalization, industrialization and economic development, the tertiary education landscape has recently been a lot different from the last couple of decades, when the number of students who are wrestling to secure a place in the university are increasing. In this essay, I am going to indicate some reasons for this phenomenon and my own assessment about that.
There are several causes for the increase of pursuer of bachelor degree in the university. The first and the most important reason is the global population explosion. As there are more and more youth who were born in the new generation, it is inevitable that the competition to go to university is harsher. The second cause is the higher education that people all received. It is vivid that the recent economy has grown so much compared to the last decade, especially in developing countries like Vietnam, which is why almost all families are affordable enough to pursue bachelor degree in order to get higher income.
In my perspective, speaking generally, this development is positive for the society, but negative for the individuals. While this cut-throat competition will eventually raise the overall quality of education and therefore contribute to the economic development and increase the living standard of citizens, it is inevitable that students would go through heavier competitive pressure and the rates of unemployment would increase for sure.
In short, the increasing competitors for the university is the consequence of several reasons, including the increase in population and the higher education standard. This development is neither positive or negative as it contributes to the economic development while putting a higher pressure on individuals. Therefore, decent policies from the authorities on tertiary education are needed to make use of this phenomenon while ensuring that all students who graduate from colleges will not be unemployed.
